Sukuh Temple on the slopes of Mount Lawu
Cetho Temple and Sukuh Temple are two temples of several temples in Karanganyar Regency, Central Java, which are located on the slopes of Mount Lawu. The shape of the Cetho Temple has similarities with the Sukuh Temple. Cetho Temple is a Hindu-style temple inherited from the government of the Majapahit Kingdom. The location of the temple is in Ceto Hamlet, Gumeng Village, Jenawi District, Karanganyar Regency. To get to this temple, we have to pass the climbing path and down complete with sharp turns. However, along the way the tourists will be presented with mountain views and agro-tea plantation which is very beautiful and charming. Cetho Temple itself is still used by locals who are Hindus as places of worship such as worship and hermitage.
As we discussed in a recent article about Cetho Temple. Click HERE to read it
While Sukuh Temple itself is located in Berjo Village, Karanganyar Regency. The temple which has a unique building structure because of its shape that resembles the Mayan pyramid building is also as amazing as Cetho Temple. The structure of the Sukuh Temple also reminds us of the pyramid forms in Egypt.
Sukuh Temple does not really have complex carvings or sculptures like Prambanan Temple or Borobudur Temple. This Sukuh Temple building gives the impression of simplicity.

When entering the main door and then entering the largest gate, you will see a distinctive architectural shape that this temple is not arranged perpendicular but rather oblique with a trapezoidal shape. This form is an unusual formation for temples which are generally located in Central Java. This Sukuh temple is also controversial, because of the statues and reliefs that symbolize sexuality.
Apart from the controversy and so on regarding these two temples, both of them remain a cultural and historical heritage of the Indonesian Nation. Seen in these two temples that many of the statues themselves have been damaged (many have no heads). For that we are obliged to care for and preserve it so that this historical heritage is not lost to the times.
